IAIDO / IAIJUTSU, Way of the Sword.

Iaido is the basis and underpinning of all swordsmanship, the style taught at Tsunami Dojo is Tenshin Ryu, ( translation school of devine will ) the Iaido form is usually in four sections  1. Nukitsuke, the draw and first cut, 2. Kirioroshi, the main killing cut, 3. Chibure, getting  the blood off the blade, 4. Noto, resheathing the blade.
In the Tenshin Ryu style there are 13 Seiza (kneeling) forms and 16 Tachi (standing) forms.
We also practice two person Kata in long and short sword.
Once you have acheived Black belt status we will move on to Iaijutsu forms , these forms were designed on the battlefields of Japan the form is based on speed and acuracy of movement, there are 13 Iaijutsu forms in the Tenshin ryu syllabus.

AIKIJUTSU, Unarmed defence.

Aikijutsu is the grappling style used by the Samurai , it consists of locks strangles,  throws, kicks and punches, the system utilyses the opponents attack momentum to overbalance and disorient to the point where their own weight will take them down , at this point we can move away put a lock on a joint to hold them in place or strike with foot or fist.
many of the locks and strikes are at places that were exposed whilst wearing armour ie wrists, throat inside legs under arms etc.
