MARTIAL ARTS SHOW 2010
The Welfare Fund Martial Arts section took an active part in this prestigious event held at the Birmingham NEC on the 22nd and 23rd of June.
The weather on this weekend was in the high twenties the section left London at 0600 for a four hour journey to Birmingham.
The team of 11 were asked to take part in the event following the success of last years event held in Leicester by the organiser Kwoklyn Wan .
40.000 people were expected through the doors with over 80 teams showing skills including Karate, Jujutsu, Aikido, Kung Fu, Shastar Vidya , Sword skills, Shoalin monks, cage fighting, MMA, and more,
The NEC is a huge place and car parking is away from the centre which can be difficult if you have to carry a lot of gear with you as we do, as well as the Martial Arts show on that weekend there was a baby show and a bodybuilding event so we had to make sure we were at the right place to save embarrassment.
Our first demo was at 12.00 we showed sword arts, Aikijutsu, disarming an attacker and cutting with a Japanese sword, the onlookers were 4 deep and all around the demo area, we were very well received and had many people asking about classes.
After a drink and some sword cleaning we were back on again, this time we showed two person Kata , just a short demo as we then held a free seminar for an hour for anyone who wished to take part, we took up 3 training areas with students wishing to learn a little of what we do, our last demo and also the last one of the day was at 16.40 we repeated our first performance but to a lesser audience which I put down to people wanting to take advantage of the good weather and also the knowledge that it was taking 40 minutes to get out of the car park, anyway there were still enough people to appreciate the hard work that my team had put in to be ready for what was a hard day for all.
The organisers have already asked us back next year in May, there will be a full write up with photos of the event in “combat” magazine and you will be able to see us performing on you tube under Tsunami Yodokan.
